MacBook Pro: Quad-core procs next refresh

At last, some good news on the tech front for Mac users. Fancy some quad-core processor goodness for your high-end Mac? Apple could be on the way to release a couple of new MacBook Pro laptops according to two configuration files in the latest build of OS X, version 10.6.2, that carry the references MacBook Pro 6.1 and the MacBook Pro 6.1b. The last time Apple launched laptops was back in June at the Worldwide Developers Conference but the findings, by a user from a Spanish Mac forum, indicate clearly that Apple will likely refresh the very top end of its laptop range.

DVD-RAM: A better rewritable DVD alternative?

DVD has been, and still is the top optical media for data storage for typical users. Blu-Ray is creeping up on it, and may well be the one for the future, but DVD still holds top dog status.As consumers and media hogs download an immeasurable amount of data from the Internet – like yours truly — both in audio and video – we need a backup solution to help us store our data (files, audio, video). DVD-RAM is such a solution, although we doubt if most people have ever explored this format, much less be informed about its merits and advantages.

Microsoft: Mixed signals on Blu-Ray for Xbox 360

Like a monkey you just can’t get off your back, Microsoft is faced with an issue that just won’t go away — Blu-Ray for the Xbox 360 console. Over and over, it has said “No, we’re not gonna have that”, but over and over these rumors refuse to go away. A recent Gizmodo sit down with Steve Ballmer led with a headline exclaiming a Blu-ray add-on for Xbox was coming.

And just a day after our No-Blu Ray-for-iMacs article (and posting their record revenues and profits), the Apple mothership quietly announces their iMac refresh – 2 new iMac models plus a new MacBook a mere 2 days (well, 1 day for some, depending on time zones) before Microsoft’s Windows 7 launch. Intentional? We’ll let you make up your mind about that. Meanwhile, onto the new models — we are a tech website first and foremost, tech industry scandalous rumors run a far second in our list of priorities.

Blu-Ray a last minute pull-out on new iMacs?

In a possible gigantic “oh no!” moment for Mac users, MacNN.com reports that the possibility of having “custom built” Blu ray-capable iMacs may have been a last minute “no go” on the upcoming iMac refresh.Blu-ray drives were pulled as an option for upcoming iMacs with little time to spare, anonymous sources claim. People described only as “close” to Apple say that Blu-ray support was originally anticipated for a near-future iMac refresh, but that it was nixed just before the computers went into production last month. Regardless, buyers would only have been able to get a Blu-ray drive as part of a custom order.
