The iPhone 4 launching in June 24

It seems like Steve Jobs has no plans letting up on this barrage of new and updated products: the iPad, a new MacBook Pro, and now the all new iPhone 4 is out. With an all new flat sleek look, this one is coming on June 24 to an Apple Store near you.

What’s new?

It looks exactly like we expected it to, what with all the leaks.  ‘Ole Steve Jobs compares it to a vintage Leica camera, glass front and back, it sure looks new and sleek. But as we say in the gadget business, it’s the inside that counts.

The stainless steel band that goes around the phone is actually an antenna system. It also provides the main structure of the phone, and yes, it’s plugged into the same old GSM / UMTS radio system we all know (now you know the reason why they didn’t call it the iPhone 4G). Check out the other features:

  • That front facing camera we were all waiting so much for — check.
  • Retina Display — a new high resolution display that doubles the pixels in each direction (960 x 640) for a 4X overall pixel count increase.  It’s rated at 326ppi, which Apple claims is beyond the human eye’s limit of distinction. Similar to the iPad, it’s an IPS display, offering 800:1 contrast. It’s still the same old 3.5-inch size, though
  • Under the hood, it has the same A4 processor that runs the iPad.
  • 25% thinner chassis
  • The battery is slightly larger — rated at 7 hours of 3G talk, 6 hours of 3G browsing, 10 hours of WiFi browsing, 10 hours of video, and 40 hours of music. Good job, Apple.
  • The WiFi is now at the 802.11n standard.
  • Rear camera with LED flash. The camera has been bumped to 5 megapixels, with 5X digital zoom and a “backside illuminated sensor,” which now can also record HD video at 720p / 30fps.

New Software

  • iOS 4 – or the iPhone Operating System 4 software comes with it — same as with the iPad.
  • New resolution display of course requires new high resolution text and buttons
  • New gyroscope technology, giving app developers a “six axis” motion control between the gyroscope, accelerometer, and compass, with a new “Core Motion” API to deal with it all.
  • New HD video using a brand new iMovie app, but you’ll shell out $4.99 for it.
  • The new front camera is for this — a new video chat called “FaceTime“. It’s WiFi-only for now, a video calling feature that works from iPhone 4 to iPhone 4,  “no setup” involved. And you can transfer over to the rear camera, if you’re calling your dog on his new iPhone 4, and he gets tired of your face.

Conclusion

For all you iPhone lovers, this is what you’ve been waiting for. All features suggest that this will be an improvement over the iPhone 3GS. The new HD display really has our attention — imagine all the HD video content from Blu-ray discs that we could put in it and enjoy. Your camera-happy side will also enjoy the new camera, which means more HD video content for you — get those external hard drives ready, or your Blu-ray burner might just get a little more action coming their way.

It looks and feels like a worthy heir to the iPhone dynasty. And just so you guys don’t say that we give Apple the recognition they deserve — Good job, Apple. You deserve it on this one.
