More and more MacBook users are coming across this thread about a general failure issue on Mac SuperDrives — that is, the Mac terminology for their optical drives (capable of CD/DVD write/read). Most of them think it’s an isolated issue, until they came across said thread, that is.

The issue, from what we at MacPcWiz have talked about, seems to be a general failure of the SuperDrive on a MacBook after an OS security update. It doesn’t seem to be brand or manufacturer-related — both MATSHITA and HL-DT-ST drives are affected with said issue, as evidenced by the numerous posts on the thread, already spanning 29 forum pages at time of writing.
What seems to be irking most of the posters is Apple’s non-commitment to the matter — no solution has been found to the problem as of late, and no amout of software tweaks and firmware updates seem to resolve the issue.
Tsk, tsk. It doesn’t bode well for our MacBook users. MacPCWiz‘s true-blue Mac user The Wiz, is as distraught as can be. Right now, he’s making do with an external DVD burner, and on occasion, a USB Blu-Ray burner for his Mac.
You might want to try that solution as well, here are some qualified USB DVD writers and external Blu-Ray burners for you to look at. We will keep abreast of this issue, giving you news items as they come.
