Unboxed: DIGISTOR External Blu-ray Burner, USB 2.0, Tray load

We just un-boxed our new DIGISTOR External Blu-ray Burner. We got it in the same package that contained the 250GB Portable Hard Drive that we unboxed and tested a couple of days back.

We got one of these, and were excited!

We got one of these, and we're excited!

This is the tray-load version, and connects to your system via USB 2.0. As I’ve been saying for a while now, I’m partial to the tray load model — callĀ  me old school, but I like having the safety of an “emergency eject” pinhole. There is a slot-load external Blu-ray burner from DIGISTOR as well, but I guess I won that argument.

As you can see, the good people at DIGISTOR included with the package some Blu-ray media — specifically a dual-layer 50GB BD-R and a 50GB BD-RE with the package. That will be enough for us to initially play around with. I’m particularly happy with the BD-RE inclusion, which allows for multiple writes and re-writes. If you don’t have Blu-ray burning software — which we do — you can use the ArcSoft Total Media Extreme software suite that’s also comes default with the package.

The package actually comes default with one standard USB cord — the only cord you will need to make the drive operational. The internal rechargeable Li-Pol battery takes care of any residual power needs that the USB won’t be able to give, no need for a power adapter. And not that you’ll be needing too much for normal use — data read, copying, playback, or anything like that. (Click here to learn more about DIGISTOR’s self-powered technology)

We also ordered the DIGISTOR dual-USB cord, which gives the drive twice as much USB juice (power), this to protect from bad burns on long burn sessions, which you would expect to when burning HD video content to Blu-ray discs. The drive’s got Panasonic guts, so it’s reliable as a heat pump, but we like the security of having extra power.

Watch this space, when we finally get to test out this baby.
