We featured the world’s first 12X internal Blu-Ray burner here at MacPCWiz a few clicks back — that was a Pioneer BDR-205 (Plextor soon followed suit with the PX-B940SA immediately after that). With this same technology, external drive company OWC (Other World Computing) brings you its updated Mercury Pro model, which gives 12X Blu-Ray burning on a quad-interface external optical drive.

Pioneer presents the BDR-S05J, the first 12X Blu-ray burner. The device supports up to 12x recording on BD-R discs and BD-RE. DVD-RAM and CD-R/RW are also supported.The Pioneer BDR-S05J-BK has 4MB buffer memory and uses SATA interface. Sharp has announced that it’s now capable of building a blue-violet laser that’s capable of writing triple and quadruple-layer Blu-ray (BD) discs at up to 8x. This would probably make a case for those people who want to back-up exclusively to Blu-Ray discs. As of the moment, people are still hampered by the 25GB and 50GB limits of Blu-Ray.
