1st mod chip for PlayStation 3

A mod chip, in gamer lingo, is a modification device for a gaming console that allows it to bypass certain anti-piracy features the manufacturers may have put into the console. The Sony PlayStation3 (PS3), a relatively new console, so far has been free of piracy issues up ’til now — a Belzar mod chip is rumored to be in the works. MacPCwiz found this:

Sony has been quite successful in deterring game piracy for its PS3 console so far. However, this may be about to change if a rumored Belzar mod chip turns out to be real. Besides supporting PS2 and PS3 bootleg games, the hardware-based hack promises many other functions ranging from stealth mode (read: to make the chip harder to detect by Sony) to region-free DVD/Blu-ray Disc playback.

A mod chip, very fashionable in the PSX and PS2 days, primarily allows people to use burnt PS2 games and bootlegs. With the prohibitive prices of high definition games for the PS3, this is definitely catching the eyes of PS3 owners out there looking for lower costs.

The chip now makes it easy for people to download the games and burn them to playable media. Most high-definition games are now burnt to Blu-ray discs. Of course, thinking of all this in perspective, you still would need to get yourself a Blu-ray burner.
