We really don’t find this surprising anymore, it was just a matter of time. Game consoles — like the PlayStation3 (PS3), Xbox 360, and the Nintendo Wii — are taking over living rooms all over the country. We found this here at endgadgetHD:
Think twice before you say that using a game console to watch TV will never go mainstream because according to a survey from the Yankee Group, more people have a gaming console at home than a cable set-top box — in fact the survey says that 2 percent more households have a game consoles than a set-top box. Now of course any survey that relies on normal people to report what technology they use, is automatically in question, but we do believe that going forward, people with box fatigue would ditch the cable box first. This is a super easy one considering how much more a console can do and in some cases even completely replace the role of the cable box — we would like to see the Wii and the PS3 join the 360 in the States at pulling double duty like this.

Considering that a cable box brings you TV and not much else, we can se why more and more people are ditching those for game consoles. I admit, we at MacPCWiz are biased towards anything game-oriented, but one will just have to look at how much more a game console brings to that table to realize that it really is a no-brainer.
If you’ve been hiding under a rock for the past 20 years or so, game consoles of today offer A LOT more than what your old NES did 20 years back. With internet connectivity, all manner of content is now available for you just lounging on your couch playing around on your console — TV shows, movie streaming, music playback and sharing, media downloads, high definition viewing, even social networking. By offering TV shows and other stuff, your cable box gets immediately nullified.
With all current consoles sporting USB connectivity, plug in your portable hard drive to your Xbox 360 or Nintendo Wii and view your stored media on your high definition TV.

Burn your high definition media on low cost, high quality media like these, and watch it on your PlayStaion 3
Or burn your high definition video to Blu-ray media (get an external blu-ray burner for that), and watch your home made Blu-ray discs and Blu-ray movies on your PS3.
The cable box will soon be outdated, you can bet on that.
