PS3 Modchip now allows "pirated" games?

Move over “geohot“, it seems like somebody beat you to the punch. The Sony PlayStation 3, in the haXX0r (hacker to you uninitiated to l33t language) point of view, is the closest thing to “impregnable” that the world has seen so far. Not anymore, it seems. Looky here:

Who needs George Hotz anyway? A USB modchip for the PS3 has emerged from the mists this morning, purporting to allow the dumping of games onto nearby storage — the console’s internal HDD and external drives are both a-ok — as well as the subsequent playing of said games without the need for the original disc. Could it be the backup/piracy nirvana Sony loyalists have been awaiting for so long?

Video and full blog post here.

Is this the PS3 modchip that will break open the floodgates to PS3 piracy?

From what we see of the video, it works both when using “backed-up” (read: copied, pirated) games from internal storage or an external hard disk. (Whoah!!) There may be some glitches, but we do hope for the best — and we mean that in the most “non-piracy” way that we can muster. We can now start “backing up” our blu-ray disc games to a PS3 USB hard drive, just so we don’t “fatigue” the original disc, you hear?!? It still won’t take games on backed up blu-ray discs, unfortunately. That blu-ray is a b!tch to crack.
