Raidon Hybrid SSD backs up your data automatically

Just last month, Taiwan-based data and backup specialist Raidon launched the Hybrid Disk. This internal storage solution features a solid state Drive (SSD) and a hard disk drive (HDD) in one mechanism. We saw this first via Macworld.com:

Designed to replace 3.5-inch hard drive mechanisms, users read and write files to the SSD while the hard drive mirrors the SSD contents at scheduled intervals, creating a back up of the data. (According to a Raidon representative, the SSD and the hard drive are not set up in a true RAID 1 configuration, where data is written to both drives at the same time.) If the SSD fails, the data can be recovered from the hard drive.

The Raidon representative said that the SSD is removable and can be used without the HyBrid Disk mechanism. You can place the SSD into another drive enclosure or connect it to a computer internally. When you reinsert the SDD into the HyBrid Disk, the hard drive will back up the SSD data.

This is a strange — but interesting — way to approach data redundancy. What the Raidon Hybrid Disk does is pair up a solid state drive — capacities are still to be determined — with a standard internal hard drive. This, apparently, is an internal hard drive replacement solution. What it does is give you the usable speed and technology of a solid state drive for your system, while the internal device mechanism and programming backs up all the data on the SSD to the HDD. That is actually pretty nifty. From what we could surmise, the internal programming does this automatically, so that if ever your SSD fails, you have a backup of your drive on the standard internal hard drive.

There are a lot of “unknowns” about this product, although the concept itself is interesting. For instance, there is still no info on how often the backup process happens, and even on how it does that. For more flexibility on backing up your data, we still recommend an external hard drive. Another backup solution gaining momentum is backing up huge quantities on Blu-ray media, possibly through an external Blu-ray burner like what we have.
