Commodore to release PC64 (C64 portable replica)

Commodore USA, makers of the ubiquitous Commodore 64 — or lovingly “C64” to nerdies (like most of the people here at MacPCWiz are) — seem set to release a portable PC set to emulate the “bread box” aesthetics of its famous ancestor. The Commodore PC64 is touted to be an “exact replica”, thereby increasing its “geek sexiness” factor to no bounds.

Remember this baby?

Most of you will have been too young to appreciate the C64 like we did, so let’s refresh your mind a bit. The C64 invariably helped bridge the gap between consumers and computers back then. It was easily connected to any current TV set, and it’s “all-in-one” box design help lessen the “threat” factor between computers and newbie users. It also included GAMES with it, which pleased us to no limits — Atari 2600 controllers and game cartridges: heaven!

As for the new model, the Commodore PC64 is no pushover. Just because the old one is ancient doesn’t mean this new one is all for aesthetic value only — trust us, it will eat up whatever data you feed it faster than you can say “blast from the past”. Here be the specs:

  • Intel Atom 525 CPU
  • NVIDIA ION2 graphics (wow!!)
  • 4GB DDR3 memory
  • 1TB Hard Drive
  • HDMI output
  • DVD/CD optical drive
  • dual-link DVI
  • six USB ports
  • integrated 802.11n WiFi and Bluetooth
  • 6-in-1 media card reader

Those specs are nothing to sneeze at — in fact, that looks like a solid machine to us. Add a USB Blu-ray burner — this baby looks primed for HD video — and you’ll be good to go. Additional storage, if you’re that much of a filemonger and you use up the Terrabyte hard drive included, can be done through an external hard disk (a 500GB USB hard drive should be perfect).

We will be watching out for this baby — oozing of all geeky hotness — Commodore is bound to announce more details soon.
