Most people — including us — are peeved at the fact that laptop batteries have so short a lifespan, no laptop manufacturer is willing to place a warranty on them longer than 1 year. We have wondered when this would change — well, look no further than the SONATA branded batteries from Boston-Power. According to the press release:
…Boston-Power’s next generation lithium-ion technology platform provides triple the lifespan of typical notebook batteries – thus increasing productivity, lowering the total cost of ownership and supporting the environment. This enables ASUS to offer a three-year warranty on the battery, matching the industry-best three-year warranty on the B-Series notebooks.
(Read the whole press release at Engadget.com.)
You read that right. The new ASUS B series portables will offer Sonata branded batteries, whose claim to fame is their superior ability to retain more of the charging capacity over time than conventional laptop batteries — “triple the lifespan of typical notebook batteries,” according to ASUS. So after three years, they should retain 80 percent of their capacity per charge. They’re also the only lithium ion batteries to earn a Nordic Ecolabel accreditation. Putting its money where its mouth is, ASUS is offering a 3-year warranty on the battery itself.
Other specs of the B-series:
- choice of Intel Core i5 or Core i7 processors
- LED-backlit display
- choice of ATI Mobility Radeon 5470 or integrated Intel graphics
- up to 4GB of RAM
- a standard 320GB hard drive
- ATI Eyefinity support to accommodate two additional displays
No word yet on whether you have the option for a Blu-ray drive — most probably not. You may have to plug in an external blu-ray burner to burn data to Blu-ray discs on these (and watch Blu-ray movies). Also, the 320GB hard drive feels a bit small for this platform, and you may have to attenuate this via external means (e.g. 500GB USB Portable USB Hard Drive).
But frankly, the Sonata batteries will be the biggest selling point here. 3-year warranties for a battery whose life will last thrice as long — that’s a good enough proposition, we think, for most of us who have been grumbling about the 1-year warranties we get on most portable batteries.

First, I would like to thanks for your recommendation for this notebook because recently I am looking for a new notebook. The design of this notebook may not be stylish like other brand but the feature like the RAM, processor is what I am looking for. Well, this Asus notebook is one of my consideration. Great post:)
