Toshiba Qosmio X500 with Blu-Ray drive

Toshiba has long been one of the strongest advocates of HD-DVD. After the Hi-Def format wars, Toshiba is finally pledging allegiance to Blu-Ray with its new Qosmio variant.

The company announced the newest Qosmio model today, the X500 series, and the most notable new feature is the overdue, inevitable inclusion of a Blu-Ray drive or burner–Toshiba’s first. (The one-time proponent of HD-DVD formally announced it was getting into the Blu-Ray game last month.) The X500 also has an Intel Core i7 processor, 6GB of DDR3 RAM, Nvidia GeForce GTS 250 graphics with a gigabyte of DDR5 memory, HDMI, Harmon/Kardon sound, and room for two hard drives (one of which can be a solid-state disk).

As the cost of external optical drives slowly dive — especially external Blu-Ray drives, it becomes more and more practical to pair them up with your existing portables. While it is good to see Toshiba bundling a Blu-Ray drive with its new models, you can opt to choose an external Blu-Ray drive for your current models which don’t have that capability. Also, another great idea would be to get an external DVD drive for netbooks, as it widens the functionality of your netbook from just a browsing and word-processing tool to a multimedia capable netbook.
