ORIGIN ventures into boutique gaming PCs

We don’t really understand how outfits like Alienware, VooDooPC, Falcon Northwest, and OverdrivePC survive economic climates like today, what with people overly netbook- cenric (even though netbooks are more likely to break) in today’s “cheapest-is-greatest” environment. But we have another entry into the “money is not an object” models of boutique gaming PCsORIGIN. This venture is headed by former Alienware founders, so you know that there is backbone behind the audacity. Read more from Engadget.com:

Does the world really need another high-end gaming PC shop? Looks as if we’ll soon find out, as Origin has just launched itself into the mix with a pair of new rigs catering to those with specific (and pricey) demands. Poised to take on the likes of Falcon Northwest, this boutique outfit has ushered itself into the sector with the new Genesis desktop and EON18 laptop.

I don’t know about profit margins, or how they even sell their units, but if they’re around, it means some people do buy them. And to their credit, their leaders do have experience in the gaming PC industry. But the prices are just astronomical to the point of ridiculous.

The desktop system, dubbed Genesis, is fully tricked out though — overclocked Intel i7 processors, your choice of ATI or nVidia high performance graphics cards, liquid cooling for proc and GPU, gaming DDR3 RAM, Blu-Ray burners and even your choice of chassis. The last one was a nice touch for us, their site says that if you have a chassis not on their list, you can send it in and they’ll customize it for your hardware. Again, we warn you that when we designed a fully future-proof gaming system (read: all the bells and whistles, money is no object) on their site, we reached something in the region of $8000USD. I don’t know if I wanna part with that amount for a gaming PC.

If there are people in the world trying to say goodbye to recession in their own way — by spending humongous amounts of money — they can start by getting one of these babies. We here at MacPCWiz, not really our cup of tea. We like to build our monster systems from ground up. We even scout Amazon for good deals, like this DIGISTOR USB Blu-Ray Burner right here. But if you want it, no one’s stopping you. And yes, that flaming paint job does look some kinda cool.
